This game has become so popular, so much that you can observe many people playing PUBG on their mobile phones, personal computers, laptops and gaming consoles.
The current generation of young people daily spend at least some amount of their time for playing this game.
Even some people have become addicted to this game.
Let us also know how PUBG was very effectively marketed on a low budget, which is the main reason for the success of the PUBG game.
Let us learn how the company which created this game is earning billions of dollars through this game.
This article is also the biography of Brendan Greene.

Introduction-

Brendan Greene, an Irish national is the creator of the PUBG game.
Brendan Greene graduated in fine arts and later went on to become a web designer. He also learned professional photography.
As he was himself an avid video game player, he used to spend majority of his time playing video games.

Passion drives him-

This interest eventually made him to learn programming and game modding.
At that time, ARMA 2 was a popular video game. This game allowed the use of mods in the game.
By using mods, players were provided the freedom to design their own version of the game by allowing them to make the changes in the game, according to their requirements.
So, Brendan Greene developed his own mod, as he found that the other mods for the game were boring.
His mod was based on a Japanese movie by name Battle Royale.
It is very interesting to know that Brendan Greene was not a professional game developer but was a photographer and a web developer.
He even doesn’t call himself a hard-core gamer.
His mod became very famed and successful within a short period of time among the players.
Eventually, Brendan Greene became a well-known person among the gaming community after this success.
In the year 2013, Brendan Greene worked on ARMA 3, which is a high graphics online battle royale game, alike PUBG.
After which he received an offer to become a paid consultant to the Sony’s King of the Kill game. He worked with Sony for a long time.

Travelling towards his dream-


But his career took an interesting turn, when he received an email from Chang Han Kim, the CEO of the Bluehole, Inc.
Chang Han Kim was impressed by the work of Brendan Greene in ARMA 3 and the King of the Kill.
Chang Han Kim badly wanted to develop a battle royale game; he was waiting to develop such game for ten long years.
The Bluehole Company decided to turn the idea of the battle royale game of the Brendan Greene into a reality.
Also, Brendan Greene realised that his true potential will get unleashed in the Bluehole studios.
So, after a period of three weeks, he shifted to South Korea.
Subsequently, Brendan Greene was appointed as the creative director of this new project.

The real work starts-

Finally, the work on PUBG was started from the year 2016.
PUBG would be completely different and even wouldn’t exist if the creator of this game, Brendan Greene had not watched a Japanese thriller film by name, Battle Royale.
In this movie, students were left on an isolated island and they were provided with food, weapons and a map.
And the main theme of this movie is that only one person should come alive from the island, so each and every character in the film tries to kill the other characters.
Many weapons and places in the PUBG game match with that in the Battle Royale movie.
Many weapons and items in the game like pistols, cross bows, sickle, light house and even the map of the island are inspired from the movie.

Developing the best game-

As Brendan Greene previously worked on many battle royale games, he had good idea on the shortcomings of those games, so Brendan Greene took a great care to produce a perfect game and to incorporate many interesting new features into PUBG.

PUBG was initially launched for PCs and Xbox on 23 March 2017.
Eventually, PUBG for mobile was launched on 9 February 2018.
Within a matter of a few months, the mobile PUBG application was listed in the top grossing apps in the Google Play Store.
And on 23rd march of 2017, the early access for playing and purchasing the PUBG game was made available on the STEAM platform.
After providing the early access of the game, two million copies of PUBG got sold within a period of two months.
And PUBG was finally launched on December 2017.
Within a short span of time, PUBG became an instant hit.

The perfect timing-

PUBG was launched at the time when the viewership of the video games was declining rapidly.
The viewership decreased as much as 45 per cent in just one year.
Many videogame viewers were not viewing the streaming of videogames and the videogame players were also desperately in the need of an amazing and new interesting video game to retain their viewers.         
On the other hand, the marketing team of PUBG was well aware of the situation and wanted to exploit this opportunity.

The win-win strategy-

So, the PUBG team gave the early access to PUBG to some gaming influencers and You Tubers who live stream the video games.
As these gaming influencers and You Tubers were in the search of a new game, they readily accepted the deal offered by the PUBG team.
So, they started the live streaming of the PUBG gameplay to their subscribers.
This was a very clever marketing strategy by the PUBG team, which played a pivotal role in the popularity of PUBG.
So, the main reasons for the success of PUBG can be attributed to their correct entry timing and approaching the gaming influencers and You Tubers.

Why are there so many live streams of PUBG?

And these gaming influencers and You Tubers liked the PUBG very much, so they began to play the game and started live streaming it.
This is the reason why now almost every gaming channel is focusing solely on live streaming the PUBG.
PUBG tournaments were also held, to which many gamers were attracted because these tournaments offered several exciting prizes.
The tournaments held by the PUBG team were huge success.
By observing these successes, even many third party companies started hosting the PUBG tournaments.

Achieving the goal-

So, their marketing goal was very well achieved with a minimum spending.
Because of all these reasons PUBG became very renowned even before its actual release.

A hundred people travel in a plane and they land on an island with the help of parachutes.
And now their real task begins, they have to collect the weapons and armours and need to eliminate the remaining 99 players in the game.
Finally, the one last remaining survivor is declared as the winner.

The main source of revenue comes from selling the copies of the PUBG.
The PUBG copies are available for sale on many e-commerce websites and platforms.      
PUBG is completely free for mobiles but not for personal computers and gaming consoles, for which you need to pay.
Till date, 500 million copies of PUBG got sold and more than 400 million people have played this game.
PUBG also earns handsome money by offering the in-app purchases.
Many unlocked features, armours, etc. are sold as in-app purchases in the app.
The other source of revenue for PUBG includes organising PUBG tournaments and selling its gaming accessories, royale passes and merchandise.

Making a billion dollars-

In the year 2018, the PUBG company has made a whopping one billion dollars and in the month of February, 2018 alone the PUBG made around 103 million dollars.       
Its highest revenue source comes from selling the PUBG copies.
PUBG has over 400 million downloads across the Android and iOS platforms.
The biggest market for PUBG is China, followed by India and USA.
For any product to become successful, the product must be good enough and should be launched in the appropriate time and also should be marketed effectively.
So, you got to know that -where there is a will, there is a way.
Here, Brendan Greene was not at all a game developer but due to his passion for games, he developed one of the most popular games ever.
Now, the net worth of the Brendan Greene is 5 billion dollars.

  • Brendan Greene, the creator of PUBG is also known as the player unknown. This means that PUBG is his battle ground.
  • Erangel Map was personally designed by Brendan Greene.
  • The term Erangel is taken from an Irish term, Éirinn, which means Ireland and Irish.Even his daughter’s name is Erin.
  • To make PUBG even more interesting, a story has been added to the game.
  • The story goes like this, in the final moments of the World War 2, the Soviet army has overtaken this island.They utilised this island to carry out secret research by performing chemical and biological experiments.
  • After a period of time the locals fought against the Soviet army, and protested by destroying things.
  • This is the reason why you can see burned vehicles, demolished houses, machinery, factories, military bases, etc. in the game.

The Blue Zone -

According to the story, the Soviet army created the Blue Zone by creating an electric field to fight away the protesters.
So, the army spread the electric current on the ground.
The purpose of the Blue Zone is to bring all the players closer, so with the passage of time, this Blue Zone becomes smaller and smaller.
Initially, the Blue Zone was of square shaped in contrast to the circle shaped, as we see it now.
Eventually, the developers realised that with the square Blue Zone, players were easily surviving and predicting the game.
Also the programming of the square Blue Zone was a bit more difficult, so the Blue Zone was converted into a circle.

Underground tunnels-

Initially, PUBG didn’t have underground areas, but was later added, as suggested by the Brendan Greene.
When Brendan Greene was working for the games like Black Hawk Down and Delta Force, he used to develop similar underground tunnels to make the gameplay even more interesting.

The iconic weapon of PUBG-

Can you guess the iconic weapon of PUBG? 
No it’s not a rifle or a gun, but it’s a simple pan.
In the initial times, pan was used for defense, that is with one pan hit; the enemy used to get killed, even when the enemy has protected himself with a level 3 helmet and armour.      
But, the role of pan has been changed for offering offensive role, as it protects you against the bullets.
You can swing the pan to protect yourself from the incoming fire of bullets. 
In the game, pan is very important when your enemy is in your vicinity or when you are confused to take any action.
Also, this is the most favourite weapon by Brendan Greene, who constantly strives to add new features to the pan.

Brendan Greene was very interested in playing battle royale and shooting games, he used to play a game by name ARMA. This game has similar gameplay as that of the PUBG.
In this ARMA game, you will be named as player one by default, but you can change it later.
So, Brendan Greene renamed himself from player one to PlayerUnknown, because for him PlayerUnknown name seemed cool.
