Does the Smartphone Radiation Really Harm You?

Welcome to Youth Motivator. I would like to dispel the most fearful myth of smartphone radiation in both simple and scientific terms.

Introduction-

You will be dreaded with various posts on internet that tells that smartphone radiation causes severe diseases like cancer and other illness. Let me explain everything you must know about smartphone radiation.

Smartphones work by emitting electromagnetic waves (radiation) that is for sure.

What is radiation?

Radiation is a form of energy.
Only some types of radiation are harmful and cause diseases like cancer and eye problems. Other types of radiation do not affect us.

Even the normal light by which we are able to see is a form of radiation.

Types of Radiation-

Radiation can be classified into Ionising radiation and non-ionising radiation.

Ionising Radiation-

Ionising Radiation is the severe form of radiation, which has potential to affect our health severely.

The types of ionising radiation in the descending order of their severity or energy are as follows-

Gamma Rays
X-Ray
Ultra Violet Rays (UV Rays) -are usually emitted by sun.

Non- Ionising Radiation-

Non- ionising Radiation does not affect our health and well-being in any way and the adverse effects of ionising radiation are often confused with that of non-ionising radiation.

The types of non- ionising radiation in the descending order of their severity or energy are as follows-

Visible Rays
Infrared Rays (IR)
Microwaves
Radio Waves

So, you can notice that the radio waves are the least powerful ones, so the fear of mobile radiation is completely unfounded. You must be concerned of only UV rays, Gamma Rays and X-Rays as only these have potential to affect you.

The mechanism of occurrence of Cancer by Radiation-

When a high powered radiation (rays) which include UV rays, Gamma Rays and X-Rays strike an atom (consider an atom of your skin cell), they strike out an electron from the atom, which ionises the atom. This ionisation is the main cause for cancer like skin cancer.

Why you should not fear about Smartphone radiation?

Each and every country specifies a SAR (Specific Absorption Rate) for the mobile phones that are sold in that particular country. Almost all of the mobile phones emit far less radiation than the SAR value.

Mobile or Smartphone technology employs Radio Waves (these are of very low energy). Radio Waves do not affect our health in any ways.

About SAR-

SAR values are denoted in Watts per kilogram units.
The measurement of SAR values depend on the country in which you reside.
India and USA follow similar measurement method in which the higher limit is fixed at 1.6 Watt per Kg.

And Europe follows a different method, in which the SAR value is fixed at 2 Watt per Kg.
So, the SAR value between different parts of the world cannot be compared as it creates unnecessary confusion.

All the mobile phones sold in your country will definitely comply with the SAR values and emit radiation not more than that of the fixed threshold limit.

The amount of radiation emitted by a mobile is dependent on numerous factors like network technology (2G, 3G, 4G or 5G), distance between mobile and the cell phone tower, the band, etc.

Even if you use your smartphone for a prolonged period of time, it will not cause any harm to you.
Almost all the scientific studies performed on the effects of smartphone radiation on health, have concluded that this radiation do not cause any kind of effect on our health and well-being.

When does our smartphones emit the most radiation?

When we are located in the areas with poor connectivity or signal, the smartphone in order to communicate with the cell tower emits more radiation. This drains out the battery a bit faster but has no effects on our health.
