Welcome to Youth Motivator. I would like to tell you the inspiring 
biography of Shiv Nadar, a co-founder of HCL Technologies.

Also I would like to tell you about the philanthropic activities of a well-known Indian Multinational company – HCL Technologies, which was born during the same time as of Apple Computers and both of these companies started in a garage.

HCL Technologies was started in 11 August 1976. HCL is currently operating in 44 countries; its headquarters is located in Noida. Currently HCL employs   more than 137,000 employees.

The inspirational story behind the Foundation of HCL Technologies-

HCL was founded in by Shiv Nadar and Arjun Malhotra.  He decided to do something big, so he left his well-paying 9 to 5 corporate job and he started his dream project.

And within a few years, he constituted one of the India’s biggest IT Company. Currently, the net worth of Shiv Nadar is above 15.1 billion US dollars.  Shiv Nadar is the India’s third and world’s ninety eight’s richest person.


Shiv Nadar was born on 14th July 1945 in Thiruchendur, Tamil Nadu, India. He graduated in Electronical engineering. He started his career in Cooper Engineering Company. 

Later, in the year 1967, he moved to New Delhi to work for the Digital Products Division of Delhi Cloth Mills, which was at that time the fourth largest company in India.

He was unsatisfied with his boring routine job, so he wished to do something challenging in his life, fortunately he came across a like-minded colleague by name Arjun Malhotra. They then decided to venture into Personal Computer (PC) manufacturing business. During that time, India had only a few personal computers. 

Shiv Nadar understood the potential growth of Personal Computers.
In the year 1975, he along with his friends started Microcomp Company, which manufactured Digital Calculators, and various office products like Televista. The company was running profitably, but Shiv Nadar wanted to do something phenomenal.

Fortunately, during that time UP (Uttar Pradesh) government was encouraging entrepreneurs in IT field, which made Shiv Nadar to explicate his dream project to UP government, to which UP government readily agreed.

As a result, in the year 1976, HCL technologies was started along with the partnership of UP Electronics Board.
During the first year, the company clocked impressive revenue of 10 lakh rupees.

HCL manufactured the India’s first microcomputer. After which this company rapidly expanded all across the world, it even ventured into computer hardware manufacturing business.

He founded a premier educational institute by name NIIT, which provides quality education in computer and Information Technology.

HCL believes in partnerships with other companies across the world as seen in its joint ventures with Nokia, Hewlett Packard, Toshiba, CISCO, etc.

HCL is also a member of World Economic Forum.
He was awarded Padma Bushan (the third-highest civilian award in India) in the year 2008.

He says that if one dreams big, some failures are inevitable and one must not get demotivated by those failures. And risk taking abilities is highly beneficial in today’s world of numerous opportunities.

Milestones in the journey of HCL-

HCL is the pioneer of computer hardware in India.
First 8 bit computer system was launched by HCL.

In the year 1978 the country’s first Personal Computer was built by HCL.
HCL helped to build the Indian Stock Exchange, which changed the face of Indian capital market altogether.

Philanthropic activities of HCL-

Shiv Nadar put aside 10 per cent of his personal wealth for charity.
He built many schools, universities, research centres all over the nation.

Shiv Nadar started SSN Engineering College in Tamil Nadu, India which was the first educational institute to be awarded with ISO certification. And this college tied up with Carnegie Mellon for Post-Graduation Education.

He also built a residential school by name Vidyagyan in Uttar Pradesh to help rural children to get educated.

He also started Shiv Nadar University, which is a full-fledged University in the year 2011 in Greater Noida.

HCL also initiated project Samuday which intends to develop a sustainable, scalable, and replicable model for the rural parts of India.
It also works many NGOs for the betterment of society.

HCL also runs GO GREEN initiative to protect our environment.
